Shut the Front Door

Like all good building stories this one starts with getting a bid for a front door that was twice our budget. It was also fugly. So we starting pulling images to convey the exact look that we wanted, and our thought process went something like this… (This process was so long ago that I lost the sources of the images. I thought I had them pinned but negative.)

We liked this single door option. It has an eyebrow arch which would contrast to our arched doorways. I liked that there were windows since we are all about the windows around here, but there weren’t enough windows.

Another eyebrow arch option.  I loved the double doors. It made the entrance look grander. The lines on this one are killer too. Plus there was divided light windows like the rest of the windows.

This pretty much sold me on having a full arched door. I also loved that it was almost entirely windows. So pretty!

We were able to nail down this door for nearly our budgeted amount. The double doors seemed like the best fit for the front elevation. Plus the fully rounded arch looks great with all the other arches around the casa.

As much as I love colored doors, the best thing at this point was to stain it ebony. We’ve talked about our uncertainty about how the outside is shaping up color wise. I think there is probably team stained door out there too.

Since we wanted a lighter stain for the wood floors, ebony for the door seemed like the best choice to avoid a clash of stains. If I was a better blogger I would have a picture of the door with the hardware and in its final state. This is why you should just follow me on instagram because I’ll post a picture of it since I know it’s missing on the blog now.

I also want to apologize for skipping around. I really, really wanted to give you an update on the master bath, but it’s a wreck. It’s really hard to show room reveals (if you can even call showing an undecorated space a reveal) when I have no control over what happens when. Sorry guys. I will have to do another video walk through once we get in, so you can see everything all at once all finished…whenever that may be. A blog post for another time.

if our doors on this house were not crappy steel doors requiring paint, i would have stripped them and given them the rustic wood look- i love it!

  2. I have always wanted a house with a fully arched door- I don’t know why, they just speak to me! Absolutely beautiful.

THE PREFECT DOOR. So good! Front doors are just another thing that baffle me. Why are usually all affordable options ugly? I’m sure this one was still big bucks 😉 because it certainly looks like it.

  4. Psh I have a finished home and no excuse. I can’t stay on track for the life of me. I am in love with your door. Like hubba hubba baby those arches!

  5. That door is so pretty. What a great choice. Everyone is going to want an arched door now :)

  6. I do like the arch, it really gives the door some personality and character!

  7. oh, it’s so pretty! a new front door is at the very top of Dave’s list of things we need to do around here…he HATES our door. I suspect ours will have to be boring old rectangle, though….

Such a lovely door! The full arch is such a nice change from the regular rectangle doors.

It’s such a departure from what’s around us, but it’s fitting for the house. We couldn’t be happier with the choice!

I lurrrrrvvv it!!!!! Great choice you two:)

  10. The stain color is gorgeous. And wow – that style door is simply impressive. And gorgeous.

You guys know how to make us all drool with these lovely choices.

  11. The door is as beautiful as your post title.

  12. Such a perfect door! I love the fully rounded arch and the fact that you stained it. It looks really good!

    • Amber says:

Thanks friend! It will probably stay stained instead of me painting it. We did have someone who was working on the house say please don’t paint this door.

  13. I LOVE the door! I’m all about stained doors. It’s very classic and timeless. When I’m helping people sell their houses, I ALWAYS recommend getting a new front door if they are having a tough time. It instantly brings up curb appeal, and brings in buyers… not that you are selling your brand new house… I just think that getting the right front door (even if it is a little more expensive) is completely worth it!

    • Amber says:

At this point I might be convinced to sell if that means I can get into my own house quicker! Pathetic! We are banking on the front door bringing the curb appeal since we have zero landscaping. It’s all a tall order for a door, but we believe in him.

Hi! We’re in the process of a full kitchen remodel in Dallas right now. We ran into the same issue with the Carrara; it’s coming out very gray. I ended up visiting several stone yards and finally found one with a MUCH whiter base and gray veining. It’s probably too late to help, but I can send you the info if you want it.

    • Amber says:

I would love the info just out of curiosity/future reference! We might change the Carrara in the bathrooms eventually. I have been everywhere which the entire island story will have to be 2 blog posts in itself! They are fabricating a slab for the island now. It isn’t Carrara, but it’s the look we were going for!

      • Christine says:

It’s levantina on zodiac lane. I don’t think I can post a picture in the comments, but it’s exactly what I wanted. In the warehouse it is honed, but can be polished. The fabricator said it was one of the lightest slabs they’d seen in years.

        • Amber says:

I don’t think we went there. I can’t remember the name of the slab yard, but it’s across the street from Chicken Scratch in Dallas. We went there twice (along with several other places). They did have a Carrara that was lighter than what was installed in our bathrooms, but we had already decided on another one for the island at that point!

        • Amber says:

Email me the picture I’d love to see your slab! amber (at) willscasa dot com

  15. I love the natural wood look! So pretty! xo K

Do you know where the first door you showed us was from? The dark wooden rounded top one. I like it very much and considering it. If not, could you tell me the company or type of door? Thanks.

    • Amber says:

I just googled picture of round door when I was researching. I am not sure where the original source is for the inspirational door images. I would just take the picture to a door and window company and see if they have a vendor who has a similar door. Sorry I’m not much help!

  17. Sarah says:

Love the door, drooling! Where did you find it? We are building and this door would be perfect I think. Thanks!

    • Amber says:

Our builder used Nix Door & Window to order all our exterior doors and windows. They ordered it from one of their vendors, but I don’t know which one.

  18. Andrea says:

I LOVE the second door you posted (double door with the arch)!! Any idea where it is from?

    • Amber says:

No clue. It looks metal. I would start searching for eyebrow arch doors that are metal or if material doesn’t matter stick with the eyebrow arch description and see what hits. Good luck!! Sorry I couldn’t be much help!

  19. holly says:

oh my gosh, i loved your door!!! it is amazing. do you happen to know the website or where the door on the second picture down is from? I am not sure if we are handy enough to do something like it on our own. I would just like an idea of the cost of something like it. Thank you. 😉

    • Amber says:

I don’t know where it’s from, but it looks like a metal door which is at least a starting point to finding it or something similar. It might be something that could be special ordered from home depot or a company that specializes in doors and windows. We used Nix Windows & Doors in Ft Worth. They had stacks of catalogues to order from. I would just take the picture in and see if they have a vendor that carries something like that door. If you don’t live in the metroplex, check to see if there’s a company locally that specializes in doors. Sorry I couldn’t be much help!

  20. Jennifer says:

Where did you find that dark double door with the eyebrow arch with the squares and rain glass?

    • Amber says:

I just googled double door. It didn’t have the information about where to get that particular door. Sorry I’m not much help tracking that specific one down!
