Building: Drywall is Up

You’ve seen us walk through after framing, the tile roof go up, and the foam insulation sprayed in. Now the drywall is up! Yeah not really exciting stuff except it’s insanely exciting to see walls.

I mean behold how dizzyingly tall the living room ceilings look now that they have drywall! Yes I purposely took a crazy photo of the ridiculously tall ceilings. Also ignore the fact that there’s only 2 can lights up there right now.

Here’s a Beckett in the belly pic post drywalling. It took about a week to tape and texture the house. When we were trimming up the budget, we made some wall texture decisions. The original (too high for us) bid had hand trowel in the main living areas.

The bid was for a hand trowel texture like the one above. I asked if we could just have them do a flat texture instead. Sure no problem except we would have to pay double for that…when we were already cutting stuff. Flat texture takes twice as many materials and labor since it has to be completely smooth which typically requires at least 2 applications.

We decided to go with orange peel texture but as light as possible. It didn’t make sense for me to pay more for a texture that wasn’t my preference, and I wasn’t going to pay for a flat texture. Way to go budget. It just didn’t seem like a place to spend money. Hand trowel texture is something we didn’t feel added value to or decreased the value of the house. Therefore it’s money better spent elsewhere.

Also how sexy does that fully round arch look. Answer: incredibly sexy.

  1. WOO! Look at those arches! Those are seriously sexy. Also…how does one dust all the way up there? I’m pretty sure spiders would just get to live in my house if I had a great room that high!!

I really have no idea what I’m going to do about changing light bulbs in that room, so I haven’t even thought about spiders yet. I’m going just hope that the insulation and general newness of the house is going to keep all the bugs away because it’s so efficient they can’t get in. That’s my story.

  2. Yay for drywall! Love that sexy arch :) We have a hand troweled texture and it’s ok. I don’t love it but it’s not terribly offensive. I definitely wouldn’t have paid for flat texture either! Any timeline updates? Will you be in before Christmas?!

    • Amber says:

I would have liked the hand troweled texture, but I just wasn’t going to spend the money on it. If it was the same price as the orange peel then that would have been a different story. We are still crossing our fingers for before Christmas. It doesn’t seem possible, but one can hope!

  3. Drywall IS exciting! Getting close!

    Wow! It’s really coming together!

    • Amber says:

Every day we go up to the house now it feels like Christmas. You can tell what’s been done and it’s looking more move in ready which is exactly what you want to see when you’ve been at this whole building thing since April! It helps keep us relatively sane!

  6. That is definitely a SEXY arch! It’s beautiful. YAY for progress.

    • Amber says:

Thank you! Yes the drywall, tape, and texture part was exciting but after the initial thrill we were ready to see more stuff done. It’s hard being patient!

  7. I’m drooling over that round arch and never knew about all those texture upgrades.

Every time I go to the house, the arches make me smile. Such much impact/interest to the space and it didn’t cost anything extra.

  8. Love the arches! (We have arches in our foyer, and I’m amazed at how many people think they’re just the best thing ever. Everyone should have them as a super easy way to get compliments). yay drywall! it’s turning into a real house!

    • Amber says:

They are such beautiful architectural features. I’m so glad I made them change it to a full arch instead of an eyebrow arch. It really is a completely different look.

  9. Drywall is such a major change from framing. It actually starts to look real! There are real actual walls! I cannot believe how high your ceilings are! It’s so cathedral. I love it. I hope you sing loud all the time in there! Also, I definitely agree with you on the hand trowel look. I’ve never been a fan. It’s a little too tuscan for my tastes. I think the orange peel is pretty standard. Most people don’t notice that it isn’t flat. … Until you go to patch a hole and realize that the flat part sticks out. Yes I’m speaking from experience… several places in our house had holes from door knobs. I don’t know what kind of people ignore the need for door stops when they have children! Hashtag: previous home owners knew nothing

Yes real, gloriously gray walls. It’s been pretty crazy to watch how my opinion about the house has changed from the foundation to the framing to the walls. Every new thing sparks another emotion. I don’t think you can relate that entirely to being pregnant or nursing hormones.

Holes from doorknobs are the worst. Ramona would always take the door stops off the trim. She was a sneaky little one. Evelyn will be nothing like that. She will be well mannered and soft spoken. 😉

  10. I agree. You are definitely bringing the sexy back with those round arches. Oh this is so exciting. I just want more :) and faster :) no pressure 😉
