Raising Readers Volume 1

Raising Readers. Finding enjoyable literature for your child that you will love too.

A new blog series of sorts is happening today. It’s all about Raising Readers and features my adorable children (no bias in that statement). In my former life, I was a first grade teacher. My passion for children’s literature is still alive and well. Also hereditary apparently since both Ramona (5) and Beckett (at 18 months!!!) love to “read”.

We wanted to share some favorites with you. It’s the best way I can document this cuteness while it lasts and hopefully help you mamas at home find some new books that make reading with and to your kids more enjoyable.

Beckett’s pick is Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night. It basically combines his 2 favorite things: trucks and night-night. He loves this book and has a lot to say about each page. No one knows what he is saying, but it is clear he’s very passionate about trucks and their bedtime routine.

What does mom love about it? It is less than $5 on amazon and has provided me with endless snuggle time with my little man.

One of Ramona’s favorites is Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs. First there are 3 bowls of chocolate pudding which is way more enticing than porridge. Plus it calls out Goldilocks parents when the “poorly supervised little girl” makes her way onto the scene. I mean these are things we’ve been saying for years. Who lets their kid walk alone into a forrest with bears?? Of course the parents aren’t all to blame, and there are lots of jokes about how Goldilocks doesn’t listen to anyone.

What does mom love about it? It’s hilarious. A sarcastic twist on a classic that I don’t ever tire of reading.

I mean look how sweet that first picture is. Thank you books for calming my kids down long enough to capture moments like these. Happy reading, friends!

P.S. You can find Ramona over on Pretty Prudent today in her reading nook.

  1. Adorable – you have beautiful children. Not surprising of course, since you are also a lovely lady inside and out.

Henry has been less and less interested in books lately, a fact which I attribute to too much television. So the TV has been more or less off in our house for the past week. Stupid winter made me a lazy mom.

Henry’s favorite right now is called Super Truck – it’s a merging of superheroes and garbage trucks. And we read Train Man and Little Blue Truck frequently, too.

    Love this new series.

Thanks Kim! I think Henry is just too busy building a house right now! Think of all he’s learning and the memories he will have from that! I’m jealous of him for that experience!! I will have to look into those books! Beckett isn’t quite into superheroes yet, but I hear it’s inevitable.

  2. Aw, they are just the cutest. My girls love books too – my 6 year old is just finishing up K and her reading has suddenly catapulted in the past month or two. It’s really cool to see happening. I was an elem teacher in a former life too :)

    • Amber says:

Ah I didn’t know that! It’s so fun to see things click with your kids after being on the teaching side of things for so long!

  3. you have the most adorable kids. besides mine. but second adorablest. 😉 and i feel the same about children’s lit!

  4. Ahhhh – cuteness overload! Dying!

  5. Could your kids be any cuter (answer: no). I can’t believe how big Beckett is getting!! Love your pictures and book picks here :)

    • Amber says:

I know they are insanely adorable and have even sweeter personalities, so I really don’t know how I got so lucky! Funny story about the pictures, I couldn’t figure out why I was getting such a soft focus on everything. I had the lens set to manual focus. I’m so blond sometimes!

  6. When did Beckett get so big! Goodness. Your children are super cute. Keep this series coming. I’m taking notes!

    • Amber says:

I think that every day. He’s getting so big. It makes me so sad that I’m not having any more. I guess I’ll just have to come steal cheeto from you. Probably shouldn’t admit that online.

  7. Gretchen says:

The curls! On Beckett! Love! Also love Mo Willems….that book looks very familiar. It might live in my house somewhere. I really need to organize my kid books….I tried to find Make Way for Ducklings to read to Abe yesterday, and I couldn’t!

    • Amber says:

Not to brag or anything (she says as she commences in a full on brag), mine are all organized ALPHABETICALLY by either author or topic. Only because I did that when I was a teacher. They all just came out of my teaching boxes about 5 months ago though so that lessens the awesomeness of that statement! Nick built me a cataloging system where I entered in the thousands of books I owned and tagged them with all kinds of things. It was insane. I am insane.
